Lesson Plans Jan. 26-30

Monday will be the 100th Day of School!
We will celebrate the 100th Day of School with a fun-filled day!
The link for my (free) 100th Day packet is here.
The book is from Kindergarten Crayons.

This week we will also be reading books about Chameleons! Our books from the Journeys Reading Series include Red Eyes or Blue Feathers and Chameleon, Chameleon. I will also include Hide Clyde and other books I have about Chameleons. The literacy unit can be found here.

We will be comparing numbers (more and less) this week. I have some math tasks we will complete and the students will spend two days comparing the numbers on playing cards-one day the larger number "wins" and the next day the  number that is less "wins" the set of cards played.
The math tasks can be found here.

We will spend one more day on measurement and then begin studying more and less with sets.
Two activities I have planned are for students to get a bowl of teddy bear counters and sort them. They will record by drawing a picture of their sort and circle the group that has more. Another activity is a mystery bag. They will choose a bag and sort the math tool. They will record by drawing pictures and then circle the group with less. Next week we will focus on more and less with numerals.

Mom had a great idea for a measurement activity. Instead of putting tape on the table for pairs of students to measure, she drew lines on chart paper. She can keep this from year to year (and was able to share it with me!).

We are continuing our measurement unit in math.
This is a great lesson to use for measuring with units. For the CCSS we only need to compare items to determine longer/shorter, but using sticks and cubes to measure strips of tape allows them to practice counting and comparing numbers. Each table has three strips of tape labeled with A, B, C. The students estimate how many cubes and sticks they need to measure the tape, then measure and  record the correct answer. Mom found this activity "somewhere online", so if it is your activity, please let me know so I can provide the link.
We did this activity today. The students took turns choosing an item from the "goody bag", comparing the item to the green pencil, and then deciding if it was longer or shorter. They really liked this activity!
These are some of the books we are reading during the unit. I made the worksheet pictured. The students had decide if the item pictured was shorter or taller than they are.
After listening to Goldilocks and the Three Bears, the students will estimate how many cubes will fit in each of the three containers, then fill and record the correct amount.
The link for this activity is here.
