Lesson Plans Sept. 3-6

I am trying to stay a week ahead and I am ready for next week!
We will be reading books about families and completing graphic organizers and writing about the books. You can find all the whole group writing sheets and literacy centers in my Families unit here or here.

Here are some of the materials I will use for Phonics.
I found the cute Alphafriends cards here. I like these cards because they have the letters at the top.
I saw my mom use these with her class so now I flip through the cards as we sing the Alphafriends song that is featured here.  Now we just sing it without the music.

A few of the Literacy Centers:

For Writing Workshop, I am continuing Lessons 6-9 from this unit by Deanna Jump and Deedee Wills. Next week, we will begin learning the writing process (ideas-draft-final copy) using my Writer's Workshop unit about color words.

In Mathematics, we are counting and focusing on the numerals 6-9. My students used the 5 frame as we worked on the numbers 0-5, so this week I will introduce counting games with the 10 frame.

The Math Centers this week are from the Developing Number Concepts book from Kathy Richardson.
For this activity, the students will pull a dot card from the cup and place that many counters on the work mats. There are many other "themes" in her book. Each student will have 8 cards to use, so they will need lots of room!

These are the shape puzzles, line puzzles and yarn strings. They will use counters to "measure" and them count how many they used. Next week we will continue learning how to use the math tools with these activities, then move on to placing a dot card beside the cards/strings/work mats, and eventually recording the answer on paper.

This Week

We will continue learning about Nursery Rhymes. We read one rhyme a day and then color the page in our book and circle the rhyming words. The students will take their books home on Friday. You can find the Nursery Rhyme Unit here.

Some materials I am using for phonics this week:

In Mathematics, we are still counting and focusing on the numbers 0-5. We will be using these for our number talks:

Our whole group lessons will include a number book, using a 5 frame to make a number and then practicing writing the numeral. As we use the 5 frame, I will show dot cards and they will "match" it on their 5 frame using junk boxes, as the week progresses and we learn the numeral, I will move to showing number cards.
I am using the Stick Kid Cuties-Number Rhymes found here at From the Pond's TpT store (free) to learning the correct number formation.
I also found some great number worksheets here from Latoya Reed's TpT store (free). She also has another set for 11-20 and they are also free.

Here are some of our centers this week.

The nursery rhyme centers are found in my Nursery Rhyme Unit.
Last week I taught them how to complete these centers and we did them together as a whole group.
I am only giving them the stamps they need to use. My goal is for them to practice putting them back in the correct space.

Have a great week!

2 Counting Lessons

I used these counting "games" this week and the students really enjoyed them.

For this game, each student needs a bowl (or work mat) and some type of "math tool" to use for counting. We used junk boxes and bowls. I let the students explore with the junk boxes about 10 minutes then they took a "museum walk" to see the what the other students created with the junk boxes (patterns, sorting, stacking, etc). Every time I would hit the xylophone, the students would put a piece of junk in the bowl. When I ran the stick across all the xylophone keys, the students would dump the bowl and show thumbs up in front of their chests when they knew how many. I asked many students to share their answer before revealing the correct answer.

I placed 10 unifix cubes in a cup for each student, then in tubs for the table. I allowed the students to explore with the cubes about 5 minutes before beginning the game. I did not use the xylophone for this game, instead I just did a repetitive action or said a phrase/word. Every time I would clap (or snap, or stomp, or say a word or phrase - their favorite was "kitty cat, meow, meow") the students would put a cube on top of the first one to create a "tower". Then they counted them, put thumbs up and I asked several students to share their answer before giving the correct answer.
I am glad that I did not use the xylophone for this activity, because we played it twice this week and the second time we played it, I decided to pair the students and let one student be the "clapper" and the other student was the "stacker", then switch. It was great to see them working together.

This is my hallway display for The Kissing Hand.

I will be posting my plans for the week tomorrow.

Journeys Reading in Kindergarten

Yesterday I walked in to my classroom and look at what was waiting for me. I worked about an hour finding places for all these materials. So. Excited.

Here's a tip-take photos of all the pieces you receive. Open the kits and take a photo of the contents before you start removing items. Then at the end of the year when it is time to take an inventory OR someday when you have to pack all the materials up, you will know exactly where everything goes and what belongs with the kits.

I am excited about using Journeys this year and have made weekly units with materials and activities to use for whole group lessons and literacy centers.
Here are the links for the bundles:

I will be blogging weekly about the lessons and centers!
