Bears Literacy Unit and Mathematics Centers

This Bears literacy unit can be used with any literature book or informational text about bears. I recommend the super cute story, Bear Snores On by Karma Wilson. The activities are aligned with the Common Core Standards. I included many teaching materials, skills lessons with process chart pieces, student response sheets, lots of writing and responding sheets, and literacy centers with recording sheets.
The coordinating Mathematics Centers packet has over 20 centers so that you can differentiate the center work or you can also use these for small group lessons. Click here if you are interested in the Woodland Animals Mathematics Centers.
Excited to get started on my next unit-Hibernation!

Math Common Core-Freebie!

I created this packet as we were trying to get our ideas together for the first few months of teaching the Counting and Cardinality Domain of the Common Core Standards. Click here if you are interested in this packet (free). It has ideas, activities and printables for you to use, modify, change and improve! I "chunked" my instruction by teaching sets of numbers (0-5, 6-10, 11-15, and 16-20).
So, I used the same kinds of activities with each set of numbers. I hope you like something from the packet and can use it with your students!

Apple Day

Kinda sad it is over....We started the day going through the "car wash" apple banner.
Then we got our costumes ready-an apple headband (I had no gray paper to make the pot) and an apple sequencing belt!
Then we did an apple craftivity.
We used apples to make a class floor graph for apple colors and stem/no stem. Then we completed the Apple Day Fun sheet and drew our apple, answered questions about the apple, and measured the apple using cubes.
To end the day, we had an apple tasting party and graphed our favorite way to eat an apple.
 It was so fun!

Grassland Baby Animals Literacy Unit and Mathematics Centers

Click here if you are interested in the Grassland Baby Animals Unit. I included activities for  the main topic, adjectives (colors and shapes), comparing and contrasting grassland animals, and a sorting activity for animal babies. In addition to all of the teaching ideas and chart pieces, there are many literacy centers! There are many activities that can be used with any literature book or informational text. The book, Animal Babies in Grasslands by Jennifer Schofield would be a book that would work with this unit.

I made the coordinating Mathematics Centers to go along with the unit. Click here if you are interested.

Random Ideas

Teaching alphabet letters is one of my favorite things to teach! I made these big books many, many years ago. The stories came from this book:
And there are two other books in this set. The stories are very small and we spent a lot of time at Kinko's (now Fed Ex) enlarging them to big book size. Mom typed the story and this is what each book looks like:
But when we read it, we bend the page back like this and only show the picture, but we can still read the text. Mom also wrote comprehension questions (recall and higher order) and they are on the very last page.

Mom had a great idea of how to pass out her response cards, she put them in her pocket chart and the students could get one before they sat down on the rug, instead of having to pass them out.
I came into school this morning and saw this:
I was so happy! Mom had taped the extra cord on the headphones and now they look so much neater. She used blue painter's tape  (because that is all we had) but it would look even better with black electrical or clear tape. I plan to do this with my computer headphone cords, too!

Here is my Pet Show Display!

I hope you have a great weekend! I will be working on the packet for Animal Babies in Grasslands!

Fall Worksheets- Freebie!

Armadillos Literacy Unit and Mathematics Centers

I really enjoyed working on this unit so much that I made the Mathematics Centers (below) to coordinate with it. Armadillos are super cute! I decided to add informational text and activities for 2 topics-armadillo's and animal homes. The activities and teaching materials can be used with any literature books or informational texts about armadillos. The story, Armadillo's Orange by Jim Arnosky would be perfect to use with this unit.
Click here if you are interested.
The activities for both the Literacy and Math Packets are all aligned with the common core standards and TN teachers, I always am thinking of activities that will support TEAM.
Check back for some FREE Fall Worksheets!

Classroom Pet Show-Freebie

The story, Julius by Angela Johnson, is about a little girl who receives a "pet" pig. A classroom pet show would be a fun activity to use with this story! I have done this type of pet show (not using real pets) just about every year I have taught and my students really enjoy receiving awards for their pets.
Each student draws a pet (they have or would like to have)  and then writes about him/her. After school, the "judges" place the ribbons on the papers and then the next day the students get to see which one their pet was awarded.

Ocean Mathematics Centers

I will use during my unit on ocean life. There are more than 12 different centers with game pieces, spinners, dice and all have recording sheets for accountability. I am trying hard to create a center for every Common Core Math Standard! Click here if you are interested.
I have the coordinating Literacy unit available, too!

Ocean Life Literacy Unit

This literacy unit has activities, chart pieces, student response sheets and literacy centers about ocean life.. Click here if you are interested in this packet. The book Life in an Ocean by Carol Lindeen is one that I would recommend to use with this unit. I will post the companion mathematics centers and free ocean worksheets this weekend!

Apple Fun and a Freebie

I enjoy teaching my students about apples and I created this "Apple Fun" packet that can be used for a unit about apples or for one day of Apple Fun on Johnny Appleseed's birthday. I included Literacy and Mathematics activities (no centers). Click here if you are interested in the Apple Fun Packet.
